Multifunctional Structural Panels for Future Bridge Applications
Confirmation seminar presented by Saharsha C Rathnasiri
Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are employed in civil engineering applications due to their many advantages, including faster construction, high strength to weight ratio. However, the application of SIPs to bridge decks have not been explored due to inherent weakness such as poor flexural capacity, failure of shear connectors. The present study develops novel SIP using ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) and carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) materials. The hybrid UHPC-CFRP face sheet enhances the structural performance and CFRP connector eliminates the failures at the face sheet interface. This study employs experimental and numerical studies, with the goal of providing design guidelines for engineers.
About Confirmation Seminars
The purpose of the confirmation milestone is to ensure that the candidate receives appropriate feedback in relation to the viability and progress of the thesis project and that the resources required to complete the program of research within the recommended timeframe are available. It is also an opportunity to ensure that the candidate has demonstrated the capacity and capability to successfully complete the thesis in a timely manner.
