Confirmation seminar presented by Saugat Shrestha

Sediment transport is a natural phenomenon observed in riverbeds. This process is very difficult to understand as it encompasses the coupling of two very complex subjects: sediment transport and fluid dynamics. Recently, a new numerical method has come into prominence, which is the coupling of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Modelling (DEM). When CFD-DEM is coupled, it can inform about the fundamental mechanisms of the sediment transport process from the micro-mechanical perspective of sediment bed movement. In this project, the CFD-DEM coupling approach is explored to understand the sediment transport and scouring around bridge piers.

About Confirmation Seminars

The purpose of the confirmation milestone is to ensure that the candidate receives appropriate feedback in relation to the viability and progress of the thesis project and that the resources required to complete the program of research within the recommended timeframe are available. It is also an opportunity to ensure that the candidate has demonstrated the capacity and capability to successfully complete the thesis in a timely manner.
