Dr Habibullah Bhuyan has expertise in Soil mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering specially characterization of unbound granular pavement materials including estimation of moisture content, porosity, density and surface deformation in non-destructive way, and geo-hydraulic characterization of soft soil in fresh and saline water environment.
Dr Bhuyan’s specific research skills / interests are the following
- Development and use of electromagnetic measurement methods and application for geomechanics and geo-hydraulic purposes in the field.
- Longitudinal and transverse distribution of moisture and density profile of a pavement using electromagnetic method.
- Density profile of dredged or deposited mud under fresh or saline water using electromagnetic method.
- Drained and undrained shear strength of pavement materials under the various conditions of suction and cyclic loading.
- Modelling of deformation characteristics of pavement materials using large scale Wheel tracker (WT) and full scale Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) testing.
- Mechanics of unsaturated soil and coupled mechanic / hydraulic processes (e.g. slope stability, swelling and shrinkage processes).
- Phase transitions processes in saturated and unsaturated granular media like erosion processes (e.g. transport of particles in pore systems, suffusion) and soil liquefaction.
- Characterization of electrical conductivity and pore fluid salinity of highly saline soil (Sea shore or port) using electromagnetic method.
- Shrinkage or swelling behaviour of soft soil using evaporation methods.
- Soil liquefaction assessment and hazard zonation using site soil investigation and geotechnical data.
