Integration of quantitative geophysics in mine waste assessments
Confirmation seminar presented by Zakaria Victor Kareth
Global ore grades are declining, driving a continuous surge in sulfidic mine tailings generation. Oxidation of these reactive tailings triggers acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), posing adverse environmental, ecological, and financial risks.
Conventional characterization methods are intrusive and spatially limited. Broadband electrical and electromagnetic geophysical (geoelectrical) methods offer non-invasive, multi-scale, and quantitative monitoring capabilities. However, there remains a lack of broadband petrophysical models that allow transformation from geophysical parameters to hydrology, mechanical and chemical parameters.
This PhD research aims to develop broadband petrophysical model by systematically investigates broadband EM responses of tailings in a controlled hydrology-mechanical – chemical parameters in the laboratory.

About Confirmation Seminars
The purpose of the confirmation milestone is to ensure that the candidate receives appropriate feedback in relation to the viability and progress of the thesis project and that the resources required to complete the program of research within the recommended timeframe are available. It is also an opportunity to ensure that the candidate has demonstrated the capacity and capability to successfully complete the thesis in a timely manner.
