Students Gear Up for Brisbane 2032 Olympics with Hands-On Experience at Suncorp Stadium

9 Aug 2024

The Brisbane 2032 Summer Olympic Games present an unprecedented opportunity for investment in world-class and iconic Queensland infrastructure. In our new capstone design course, civil engineering students at The University of Queensland are forming groups of design engineers tasked with conducting a comprehensive civil engineering design assessment of an existing stadium and associated infrastructure at a potential Olympic development site.

Last week, to mark the start of the new semester, UQ students and staff completed an on-site tour of Suncorp Stadium, a proposed centrepiece for the upcoming games. This visit is an integral part of our course, allowing students to enhance their understanding and familiarity with sports venue infrastructure. In subsequent course activities, they will explore concept and preliminary design activities, addressing multiple civil engineering disciplines including structural, traffic and transport, geotechnical, and environmental engineering.

A big thank you to Stadiums Queensland and Suncorp Stadium for hosting 70 UQ students and staff. This hands-on experience is invaluable in preparing our future engineers for the challenges and opportunities ahead!
